if your running windows then you can do system restore. it restores the computer to last time you took 'picture' of the hard drive. if it was recently, but before the problem, then you can do that and you wont lose any files.

I've tried system restore, and l still have problems with my computer. I've sent my computer away time and time again, and all they do is run a full system recovery. Last time l sent it away for repair they kept it for SIX weeks.
So l guess a full system recovery means l will lose all my files...yet again .

P.S l pay this kid over the road (my sons friend) $10 to help with certain techi probs, and he's always trying to upgrade my computer...(with god knows what ?). He looks as though he knows what he's doing, but always manages to bugger things up fpr me. So l called a technician and he said l need to do a full system recovey.
Wish me luck...

what exactly is wrong with it?

Sometimes the best thing to do is to reinstall the operating system, the best reason to do this is that it will wipe out any non-hardware related problems that your having. Another big advantage is that it can be done in a few hours. I can't imagine having the computer in the shop for six weeks. Of course, before you do this back up all your files( don't wanna lose all those Kai photos that you've downloaded). :D

Well for starters it freezes all the time, and l get pop-ups but when l get these pop-ups l get pages and pages of them and when l start to click them off, a page comes up saying click don?t send, so when l click don?t send? it clicks off every single page l?m on, and l have to start from scratch. I can?t even get into my mail half the time. It?s such a headache.
Thanks guys :smt023

P.S?I guess after Tidus?s incident this is but a minor problem.

Those pop up problems might be from viruses or other malisious crap from the internet. A couple of free programs that you might want to install and run on a regualar basis are Ad-Aware and Spybot. Here's their links:
http://www.lavasoft.de/
http://www.spybot.info/
And don't forget to update and run a virus check on a regular basis! I use AVG, it's free and works pretty well.
Yes it's true!!! Pinhead is a cheapskate and would rather use free stuff than spend money!!! ;)

Hey cheapskate, l've tried Ad-Aware, Spybot and recently paid $200 for Firewall...to no avail.
I'll give AVG ago. Thanks for the tip Pinhead. :smt023

You might also want to consider getting a second hard drive. I have one without an operating system on it that I keep all my data, pics and other files on it. I only put programs on the main drive.
Since the slave drive doesn't have a system loaded on it, it has so far escaped all the crap that has corrupted or buggered up my main drive. Also.... when something does take down the system, I just pop the slave drive out and pop it into one of the other computers and I have no down time while I do a wipe and re-install on my computer.

TheFrey has the right idea, I have an external hard drive that is 250 gigabytes and I store all my crap on it. If the computer takes a dump then I'm safe 8)

I have a second hard drive, one is empty and one is almost full?so now what do l do ?

It depends. Is the empty one a slave drive? Without an operating system?
If so, you might try loading all your important data files on it. Then do the spybot, virus and what have to the whole system. That way if you trash the system delousing it, you will still have your data.
Then physically disconnect the slave drive. Once you have wiped and reloaded the main computer and have all your protections up to date, then and only then reattach the slave drive and do a couple of deep scans to make sure you don't have any bugs hanging around waiting to re-infect you.
I find this makes the whole wipe and reload routine fairly painless. It is still tedious mind you... but since you aren't losing anything but time, it isn't so terrible. And when you are done, you have a skippy fast happy comp.

I just recently experienced PC problems.
I woke up today and no connection to the internet .... I fiddled with a few things that my non-techy self knew how, to no avail ....
So I broke down and called tech support(gotta luv these people) and found out that their modem was busted and all I needed to do was go to one of their offices and switch the old one for a new one at no cost.
So I get home with this thing and open it up and read the directions and proceed to set it up ... everythings hooked up correctly and I still have no internet :?
Another call to the tech guys ...then a call to Norton 'cause it seems the firewall is blocking me somehow when it never did before :? ...then another call to my ISP tech guys followed by the problem not being solved and them giving me an 800# to Microsoft .....
In the end, I fiddled once more with the cables and did a system restore ....FIXED!
System Restore has saved my arse once again! :-D :smt023 :smt101
Sorry to read of your troubles , elizabethlwrnce ....I know exactly how it feels to lose all your precious photo's and music and such, it's happened to me before .
The best idea is to save all your stuff to something that is user friendly and will let you upload it back to your PC when it's ready.
In fact, I need to that myself ...as the saying might go...'sting me once, shame on you.... sting me twice , shame on me' ...
...wish I was more PC savy and could be of some help..

Skippy fast happy comp?eh? ;)
Okey Dokey then, l?ll hop away and see if l can play around with my hard slave drive.
Who knows l may actually fix the darn thing, and if you don?t hear from me for a while?well you?ll know l?ve buggered things up .
Much appreciated. :smt023

RE: Saving the Data Files
If you have a CD- Writer - you can go to town backing up all your goodies before handing over your horse to the firing squad.
If not an internal, An external USB writer would be a great investment. A CD writer is like a never ending unlimited hard drive and CD blanks are very inexpensive these days. You could write your heart out. If you don't have an external drive, perhaps a friend might lend you theirs for the weekend?
A DVD+ or -R could even do more in a single swoop if you have mountains of goodies and videos.
Nothing LEXX should ever be Lost!!
A word about system restore:
If a virus is saved in a system restore point, virus programs cannot get in there and have no access to getting at them. If you restore to a point where a virus was present and got saved, it will pop out of the can all over again.
Another measure:
Boot your computer to an antivirus bootable CD and scan before you ever go into windows. Many recent anti-virus programs come on bootable CDs. In your computer's setup, you set it to boot to a CD in the same manner it could boot to a floppy in the old days. Let the virus program scan your hardrive from the CD with nothing else in memory.
Picture XEV from Season 2 "THE WEB" or "THE NET" stomping her boot down on the pesky intruder. Crush the damn mine critter varmint!

my dad recomends that you go into event veiwer
-right click on my computer, then click on manage, then click the event veiwer folder.
after that click application, look for any errors, if there is not any there click in system, and find the error.
once you find the error double click, it will have a link in the description, click and let it do what it wants. (tis a link to microsoft) there should be a remedy there.
also, Kaspersky is a really good firewall and anti-virus program, i recomend it.

Sorry i meant to give you an example. Your HP must be stock, your second drive and anything else non-standard like 3D cards, sound board, WILL stop your recovery, you will get a problem like a "glue error"
Once you have done it back to stock, you are correct F10 is the key then follow the prompt's.
Once the restore has finished, you can reinstall the non-standed items.
I have some HP recovery disks here depending on your model.
Most recovery disks from HP Aust are $120.00.
But you ONLY need these disks if your hidden partition has been deleted.

PM me if you like, cause i really am more than happy to help.

Thankyou for the offer Flipper, and thanks to everyone else too.
I did try most of the above and l eventually called out a technician who found the problem. It was a hidden tool bar with Friendly finders, Casinos, Sex ads?etc.
Everything?s working fine now.
Cheers?~Elizabeth :smt023

Struth mate i never knew i had something in common with camels. :-D
The question is, is it when you're laying on your back or your stomach. :P
On my tummy cause i have 60 liters of water on my back for when i go walking in deserts, i can go months without finding fresh water.
I CAN sleep on my back but i look like a turtle smoking the weed.
My water (never thought i'd ever hear a man saying that) comes in handy at night for boiling a billy. (Gumleaf tea anyone?)

Better to be humped on the front camel-style than humped on the back like a whale, I suppose. Or to be the Humpback, or is it Lumpback?, of Notre Damn. I'm guessing Zev Bellringer was a Quasimodo reference.
Curiously, my toe is humped like a camel. Good thing I hear camel-toes are in these days.
Ah, one day I hope to move to Oz to live the life of a jolly swagman. Smoking the weed from a giant billabong while waltzing with Matilda the kangaroo, that's the life for me.

Fair suck of the sav cobber ! Crikey, are you fair dinkum ? A humped toe you say, better than an awning over the toy shop. A little walkabout , back of Burk ?ll do ya good mate.
Don?t be shy, say G-day, put up your feet and watch Hey, Hey. ;) (re-runs)

My thoughts exactly. And there are camels, toes and all, traversing the plains of Oz.

Fair suck? Strewth, gets a gobful (scorn cause it's hideous). Fair dinkum? You should see it in me thong; would take a very big awning. Shag on a rock, stands out like a sore thumb, but it could be humped much more.
Choke a chook! A good jackaroo, one more reason to move to Australia.
-[i]Dinky-di, Funky the true blue (balled?) banana-bender... And no, that's not a "puppetry of*" reference, it's cause I lived in Northern Queensland.
PS I should post a pic of a biug toe in a thong, (both big toes in thongs would be 2 much), but I reckon you might chuck up yer Vegemite.
PPS I miss Hey, Hey it's Saturday. *Liitle Dickie, hey, now that's a Hey, hey puppetry ref, as is Ozzie the Ostrich.

Indeed, though not indigenous to the area, they're well-suited to it as it can be dry as a dead dingo's donger there. Though I expect the jumbucks might be more to your taste (just throw a few sheep on the barbie).
