I've bought quicktime pro and am trying to make some small clips from Lexx and Michael McManus movies and make them into quicktime .mov files.
I'm converting my .dat files into .avi files using a conversion program, then importing them into quicktime to convert and save them as a .mov quicktime file. That I have figured out. I also (after several hours of reading and happening upon a post at another board) figured out that I have to save that file as a self contained file in order for the movie to be viewable on the web to other people.
My problem is that the .mov file is 40 megabytes for a one minute clip/sound movie. How can I compress it in quicktime pro to make it more manageable?
Anyone familiar with quicktime pro and it's processes? I've been at the quicktime site reading quite a bit but am not exactly finding the information I need.
Thanks!
I wonder if you can use TEMPGNC for making smaller files. why do they have to be .mov files?

I like quicktime and I'm just getting into this video conversion, I have no idea what I'm really doing, just bumbling along learning as I go. What kind of file is the one you're talking about? I'd like to keep it in the quicktime format (I just invested 30 bucks in the program) but need help in compressing it within quicktime.

Sounds promising! I hope you'll be able to figure out how to do it the way you want. I'm sorry to say that I can't be of any help whatsoever with your problem, so you might as well ignore this post.
But it does sound promising! [smilie=0-02.gif] :D

I use QuickTime Pro myself. This link might help:

I tried that and it brought a one minute clip down from 40 megs to about 32 megs which is still too huge. The instructions don't tell what levels to compress it down too. Am getting very frustrated with it.

I thought the "Mpeg 4" codec was the smallest. Can your program also save in that format?
Either way perhaps something may be found of use at:
"Secrets of Video Compression"
http://www.quicktiming.org/tutorials/compression.php
or
http://www.digitalvideoediting.com/
Their "Techniques" topics under "Tutorials" have many articles including for QuickTime Pro
A very huge Video Resource site with many sub-sites, tutorials, downloads, etc:

the main site for 'DivX-Digest', 'DVD-Digest' and 'DVDR-Digest'
and all types of video tools and utilities, encoders, rippers, convertors, etc.

(The above link is for 'DVD' -there are also other downloads listed under each of the other headings.)

Thanks! I'll check it out when I get home tonight. I printed out the 50 page pdf file on quicktime pro, but the compression instructions aren't the clearest on how to compress it to make it much smaller but still viewable on the web.

I had the same problem until I tried Sorenson Squeeze. This program can make a quicktime file much smaller. Sorenson helped make the codecs with Apple, so leave it up to this guy to keep the really juicy stuff for himself.
