Again, sorry if these Qs seems tedious & obvious to you, but to me they are great mysteries...
1. Why do I sometimes get a little box with an X in it instead of a picture?
2. When I then try the "show picture" click , why does it sometimes not work?
3. Why does this sometimes happen to my avatar?
4. And then, why does it generally resolve itself?
Thank you

Hi Jerhume,
Your picture needs to be no bigger than 100 x 100 pixels and 24 kbs for it to fit as an avatar. If you had an old avatar and see the X now it may have been from when the board we re-set awhile back, but if the pic is within the size listed above, it should work.
If you have a pic loaded within those specifications, then I don't know why it isn't showing up. I'd try re-loading it and seeing what happens.

Are you still having trouble with an avatar, Jerhume? I can help you if you're having trouble with the sizing of one.

Usually, the probs you mention in your first post are related to your browser, jerhume.
As far as uploading an avatar to the bored, as mmlover notes, as long as it's 100 x 100 pixels or smaller and 30 KB or less, you should have no prob.
Indeed, size doesn't matter in this case since your avatar was sucessfully uploaded at one point but has been deleted. This is why you get the little box rather than just blank space. (Your avatar was at images/avatars/1106875563427124f7bc8d7.jpg- exactly where it should be, but it's gone now.) The likely explanation is that it was lost when the bored was reinstalled recently and you simply need to upload it again.
If that doesn't work, then I'm sure that a solution can be found (the fairies and imps around here do stir things up now and then without rhyme or reason, but can usually be placated with a saucer of milk left out in the garden at night...).

I seem to be having a problem with all of it at the moment.. I originally uploaded my avatar when I was online at work (working hard as usual) but now that we've got this computer at home, I can't quite suss it out, as the image I used doesn't seem to be in jpg format any longer... & I took ages resizing it, according to your advice, mmlover.
This is complicated by me not really having the vocabulary for this - I am astonished to hear that my avatar was at the location you give, iStan & that it was where it was supposed to be... I haven't a clue how it got there.
Thank you both for your help. So, I will try another upload at work tomorrow, as it worked once there & then probably return with more dumb questions. (I am probably a bit jaded right now, as I've just spent some time trying & failing to save my south park picture .. but we won't go there) :headbanging:

It depends where you got your image/pic from. If you got it from the internet it may be allready in the jpg format (this is the format you need to convert your pic/image to before uploading it to your profile)
To be honest my advice would be to get a photo/image editing programe (there are some available free to download on the internet...some of them have tuitorials explaining how to resize the image and then save it in jpg format for the web)
Hope this helps.

jerhume- you might find this thread from the old bored helpful as well: please click here (http://lexxdownloads.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3629). Apparently, the programme most popular for avatars is irfanview, which is mentioned there, and gela gave step-by-step instructions on using it. Hope this helps.

Welcome to the bored Kher-za! C'mon up to the Off Topic Chat forum & say hi. Most people don't look down here in the help forum unless they have a problem. So, c'mon up! :smt023

There was a little prob with the bored last night- a bit of outside interference. Sorry for any inconvenience, ILK. All should be fine now (except for the fact that your avatar privileges have been revoked :P )
