It's probably about as real as that Bigfoot footage I shot while hunting in Oregon last fall. :P

Let me guess... Was the Bigfoot riding on a unicorn? ;-)

The odds are not too bad that there is intelligent life out there somewhere, but...

As Bill Bryson puts it in A Short History of Nearly Everything, 'space being spacious, the average distance between any two of these (possible) civilisations is reckoned to be at least two hundred light-years.' The speed of light being understood, to the best of our knowledge, to be the speed limit of the universe, that makes for a rather lengthy trip between sentient neighbours.

Worse still, we're out on the fringes. Bryson sums up (an argument that I've come across many times over the years, but most eloquently presented by him):

Of course, it is possible that alien beings travel billions of miles to amuse themselves by planting crop circles in Wiltshire or frightening the daylights out of some poor guy in a pickup truck on a lonely road in Arizona (they must have teenagers after all), but it does seem unlikely.

Not really. I hear those Inner Galaxy neighborhoods are pretty rough. ;)
